ABOUT THE SERIES
|
TRUE HISTORY (Outside the Echo Chamber) is the ground-breaking documentary series that dares to ask the questions that mainstream historians REFUSE to answer.
Shot entirely on location around LONDON, the series follows two passionate amateur historians as they investigate the REAL stories behind the capital's most famous landmarks — stories that the establishment has kept hidden for CENTURIES.
Now re-mastered in stunning 4K HIGH DEFINITION and combined with never-before-seen behind-the-scenes biographical footage, this is history television as it was MEANT to be made.
WARNING: Some of the information contained in this series may challenge everything you thought you knew about London's history.

CHAPTER 1: THE MAKING
In the early 2000s, two aspiring documentary filmmakers and passionate amateur historians based in London set out on an ambitious project. Armed with cameras, determination, and a burning desire to expose what they saw as a deeply flawed mainstream historical narrative, Keith Dragon and Jim Hatch spent months travelling to London's most iconic sites.
Dragon had been researching alternative historical accounts of London's landmarks for years — filling notebooks, visiting archives, and corresponding with a loose network of independent historians who shared his scepticism of the official record. Hatch, who had worked in local radio, gave the project a voice. Together they made an unlikely but effective team.
The shoot lasted the best part of two years. The team — Dragon, Hatch, cameraman James McGrane, and sound recordist William Pine — worked entirely without institutional support, funding the project themselves and calling in every favour available to them.
Simultaneously, an old friend of the group was shooting his own film: a candid, fly-on-the-wall biographical documentary about the team. This footage — never intended for broadcast — would later prove to be just as compelling as the series itself.
The resulting series — True History (Outside the Echo Chamber) — was raw, uncompromising, and frankly unlike anything seen on British television at the time. Which, as it turned out, was precisely the problem.
"We knew we were right. We just needed someone to listen. As it turned out, that would take a little longer than expected."
— Keith Dragon, Producer/Director (from the biographical documentary, c.2003)

CHAPTER 2: THE REJECTION
Over the course of four years, Dragon and Hatch approached virtually every television channel in the United Kingdom in an attempt to have the series broadcast. The BBC. ITV. Channel 4. Channel 5. Numerous cable and satellite outlets. The response was always the same: silence, a polite decline, or — on one notable occasion — a letter informing them that the series "did not meet the factual programming standards required."
Dragon wrote back asking what those standards were. He did not receive a reply.
The biographical footage from this period is particularly striking. Hatch and Dragon are seen sitting in a McDonald's somewhere in central London, surrounded by rejection letters, methodically planning their next approach. Hatch is eating chips. Dragon is not eating anything. He is reading a letter from Channel 4 and his expression is one of a man who has just been told the sky is green.
Frustrated and ultimately defeated, the project was abandoned in 2007. The tapes were boxed up, sealed with packing tape, and labelled in Dragon's handwriting: "MISC — DO NOT RECYCLE." And there they sat. Gathering dust in a donated-materials pile at a London public library. Forgotten by almost everyone.
Almost.
CHAPTER 3: THE DISCOVERY
Fast-forward to spring 2024. Two Estonian gap year students — Liis Tamm and Andres Kask — are volunteering in the archive section of a London public library as part of a cultural exchange programme. Their job: catalogue decades of donated materials that nobody has looked at in years.
The work is, by their own admission, almost entirely uneventful. Old magazines. Parish newsletters. The occasional interesting photograph. And then, one Tuesday afternoon in April, Liis pulls a large, unmarked cardboard box from a shelf. Inside: a collection of 1970s railway timetables, a VHS recording of a local church pantomime, several copies of a magazine called Pigeon Fancier Monthly — and, at the very bottom, a bundle of MiniDV tapes in a plastic carrier bag.
On the carrier bag, in faded marker pen: "TRUE HISTORY — OUTSIDE THE ECHO CHAMBER — MASTER COPIES."
But that wasn't all. Beneath the series tapes was a second set of footage in a separate bag — labelled simply "Behind The Scenes." A biographical documentary about the historians themselves, shot by a friend during the original production. Candid, intimate, and entirely unplanned for public viewing, this companion film provides a remarkable portrait of two men absolutely convinced they were on the verge of changing the world.
Liis and Andres watched the tapes that evening on a borrowed MiniDV player. They did not go to sleep until 3am.

CHAPTER 4: THE RESTORATION
Both sets of footage have now been painstakingly restored and upscaled to 4K resolution. The original MiniDV tapes — despite spending the better part of two decades in a cardboard box — were in remarkably good condition. William Pine's location audio recordings, captured on a separate DAT recorder, were found in the same box and are reproduced in full.
The two films have been cut together to create something entirely new: a layered, textured viewing experience in which the biographical footage provides context, commentary — and sometimes startling counterpoint — to the historical arguments being made in the original series. Watching Dragon passionately hold forth about the Tower of London, and then immediately cutting to a handheld shot of him arguing with a seagull over a sausage roll, is — it has to be said — one of the great pleasures of the finished work.
The result is television that is as fascinating about the people behind the camera as it is about the history in front of it.
True History (Outside the Echo Chamber) is now available. And this time, nobody can stop it.

MEET THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE SERIES
These are the remarkable individuals who dedicated years of their lives to bringing the TRUE history of London to light. Without their passion, determination, and extraordinary willingness to be laughed at by television executives, none of this would exist.
|
q
KEITH DRAGON
Producer & Director
|
|
The visionary — or, depending on your point of view, the obsessive — behind True History. Keith Dragon had been convinced since his early twenties that the accepted historical record of London was, to use his own words, "a very polished fiction."
A self-taught historian with a passion for archival research, Dragon spent years compiling alternative accounts of the capital's landmarks before finally deciding the only way to be heard was to make a film. He mortgaged himself to the hilt to fund the production and personally drove the crew van to every single location.
The behind-the-scenes biographical footage paints a complex portrait: brilliant, funny, exhausting, and utterly uncompromising.
Fun Fact: Keith once argued with a security guard at the Tower of London for forty minutes about the correct historical interpretation of a gate hinge. The gate hinge won.
|
|
|
q
JIM HATCH
Presenter
|
|
The face of True History. Jim Hatch brought an infectious enthusiasm to every location, a gift for making complex historical arguments sound both accessible and genuinely urgent, and — as the behind-the-scenes footage amply demonstrates — an almost heroic capacity for standing in cold car parks for hours while Keith Dragon re-planned the shooting schedule.
Originally from London, Hatch had worked in local radio before Dragon persuaded him to front the documentary project. His presenting style — direct, conversational, never condescending — became the series' most distinctive quality.
Fun Fact: In Episode 3, Jim can be seen mouthing the words "I genuinely do not believe this" off-camera. He maintains to this day he was reading a script note.
|
|
| |
|
q
JAMES McGRANE
Cameraman
|
|
The quiet genius of the operation. While Dragon theorised and Hatch presented, James McGrane was the one actually capturing it all on camera — and doing so with a visual intelligence that, in retrospect, elevates the series well above the standard of a typical amateur production.
McGrane had a background in photography and had shot music videos and short films before joining the True History team. His instinct for light, composition and — crucially — when to keep the camera rolling and when to switch it off, gives the series its cinematic quality.
The biographical footage reveals a man of few words but considerable dry wit, whose raised eyebrow during Dragon's more extended monologues became something of a motif.
Fun Fact: James shot over 200 hours of footage for the series. Roughly 180 hours of it featured Keith Dragon's back.
|
|
|
q
WILLIAM PINE
Sound Man
|
|
The unsung hero of True History. Sound recordist William Pine faced challenges that would have broken a lesser professional: gusty winds on Thames-side locations, ambient traffic noise at Westminster, and — perhaps most testing of all — the need to capture intelligible audio while Keith Dragon delivered impassioned arguments from inside a tunnel at the Tower of London.
Pine had trained in broadcast audio and brought a level of technical expertise to the production that was, frankly, somewhat out of proportion to its budget. His work gives the series a sonic quality that repeatedly surprises viewers expecting something rougher.
Fun Fact: William kept a handwritten log of every location. His notes, visible in the biographical footage, consist almost entirely of weather complaints and a running tally of how many times Keith changed the running order.
